Sales Tax Increase in Johnson County PDF Print E-mail

This Spring Johnson County voted on a penny sales tax increase to pay for "flood damages."  The University of Iowa College Republicans joined the Ax the Tax Committee in believing that Johnson County is Taxes Enough Already and a sales tax increase during a recession was a bad idea.  The vote did not go as well as planned.  Coralville voted to defeat the tax making it more true that students should shop in Coralville.

Joining Coralville in defeating the tax, were North Liberty, the unincorporated areas of Johnson County, and the portion of West Branch in Johnson County.

Approving a tax hike were Iowa City, Hills, Lone Tree, Oxford, Solon, Shueyville, Swisher and University Heights.  Iowa City has proved once again that it does not care about the student population by voting for a tax that is largely regressive on students.  It passed by only 6 votes in Iowa City.  This illustrates that students must pay attention to local issues and vote in special election.

The defeat of the tax in Coralville is a blow to the 'Yes For All' pro-tax folks, because Coralville's array of shopping venues and hotels would have generated the lion's share of tax revenue.  That money would have been pooled, with all cities approving the tax able to collect portions of the pooled money in accordance with a formula handed down by the state.

In the future we must all pay attention to these issues for the University of Iowa can help Iowa City make the right decesions.
